Newark's Green Infrastructure Program
RainReady Newark is the City of Newark’s Department of Water & Sewer Utilities’ green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) program.
Designed to increase the city’s resilience to stormwater, the green infrastructure program uses natural processes to capture, filter, absorb and reuse rainwater and snowmelt.
RainReady Newark contains several components
Developing projects to meet Newark’s goal of managing 213 acres of impervious surface with GSI to reduce the instances of Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) events as part of the City’s Long Term Control Plan (LTCP).
Evaluating, designing and installing projects across the city, in all five wards, including both the Combined Sewer System (CSS) and the separate sewer system (MS4) areas of the city to combat flooding and water quality concerns.
Focusing on green stormwater infrastructure as an opportunity to maximize community benefits with improved stormwater management, improved air quality, reduced urban heat island effects, increased green and open space and a focus on local workforce development.
Encompassing a robust community outreach and engagement program including ten ward-based events in collaboration with our community partners and two in-park events at Mildred Helms Park and the Bo Porter Sports Complex. Events will focus on answering community questions and soliciting community input on the next set of projects for RainReady Newark.
Our Vision
Implement sustainable, cost-effective and collaborative green infrastructure projects that will promote connectivity and equity, employ a local workforce, and empower those who live and work in Newark to be champions for stormwater management and quality of life improvements.
